EXPORT STATISTICS

WHERE WELLINGTON STANDS AMENDED RETURNS SHOW ACTUAL TRADE During the three .months ended March 31 last the exports from the ports of New Zealand amounted to a * al u O of £12.162,570, as against £13,196.514 in the corresponding quarter of 1921. Since January 1 Jasy™ soods exported have been credited to the ports at which thev are shipped on the exporting vessel instead of being credited to certain districts of production, and the figures for the March quarter, therefore, show the actual trade of the ports. The figures for the March quarter of 1921 were compiled on the old system, by which goods were credited to a district of p o duction whether, exported through the port of such district or not. Tho iollowing comparative figures, therefore,

The figures show how well grounded was the complaint made by Wellington people against the old system of preparing export statistics. The district of production that had been allotted to Wellington for statistical purposes ws.s very much smaller than the district actually served by - the port, and.goods that were shipped from Wellington were credited in the returns to other ports. Wanganui, Patea, and New Plymouth are ports that used to be credited with the export of goods that really were shipped from Wellington, and their export returns have declined sharply now _ that the basis of tho official figures is the actual trade of each port.
