Tho death is announced by a Press Association message from London of Lord Sinclair, who served with the 57th Regiment in tho New Zealand war. A Press Association message from Wanganui reports the death of Mr. Alfred Burnett, at the age of 69 years. Deceased was one of the earliest settlers in the Wanganui district, having arrived there in 1856 with his parents. He was a successful farmer, was closely identified with the freezing industry, and was one of the founders of tho Wanganui Meat' Freezing. Company. Ho took an active part in public affairs, and a great interest in returned soldiers. Besides donating largely to the funds he gave the site on which the clubhouse stands, and was a member of the patriotic executive since its inception. Mr. W. R. Hursthouse has been appointed locum dental surgeon at the Wellington Hospital during the absence in America of Mr. E. G. Bender. The death is reported of another old and highly respected identity in the person of Mr. William Edmonds, formerly residing at “Hillersden,” Karon, who passed away on April 22 at the age of ninety-ono years. The funeral took place on Wednesday morning, deceased being interred at. Karori Cemetery. The funeral obsequies were conducted by the Rev. G. Y- Woodward. M.A. Amongst those present were His Worship the Mayor (Mr. R. A. Wright. M.P.). Messrs. R. Tait (assistant town clerk), F. K. Kelling, Madam Darrell, also members of Court Robin Hood, of which lodge deceased was a member for nearly fifty, years. The deceased is survived' by his son, tho sole remaining member of his family—Mr. Harry Y. Edmonds, formerly new business manager for tho A.M.P. Society. The family arrived in Wellington from’ the Old Country in 1871, and have resided in Wellington ever since. Tho death occurred in hospital on Wednesday night, after a very brief illness, of Mr. John Jury Korslake, who for thirty-eight years was overseer of works in tho city engineer’s department of the City Council. Until he retired on superannuation at the end of November, 1920, Mr. Kerslake was a very well-known figure about the city. He was a great lover of flowers, and grew sweet peas to perfection. Mr. Kerslake was born in England seventy-four years ago. and had been a resident of Wellington for forty-six years. At the 1931 mumcipal elections, Mr.; Kerslake sought a seat on the .City Council, but was among the defeated candidates. He leaves a widow, one daughter (Mrs. S. G. Cowles, Hataitai), and one son (Mr. J. Kerslake. who has charge of a plantation at Samoa).. Mr. T. T. Kerslake. of Palmerston North, is his brother. The funeral will leave the late Mr. Kerslake’s residence, 95 Brougham Street, at 2 o’clock to-morrow afternoon. At the City Council meeting last evening the Mayor made lltting reference to tho late Mr. Kerslake. Ho was a very old employee of the council, was in charge of their public works for many years, and was one who had always done his duty fearlessly and well. Mr. Wright moved that a motion of sympathy be conveyed to tho members of Mr. Iverslake’s family. Mr. W. H. Bennett in seconding the motion, endorsed all tho Mayor had said, Mr, W. G, Blackie will succeed -Mr, Raymond as inspector of schools in the Wellington education district.
