COMPULSORY POOL

TO HANDLE BUTTER AND CHEESE DISCUSSED 'IN SOUTH ISLAND BY Telegbaph—Pbess association. Dunedin, April 27. An extraordinary general meeting of the South Island Dairy Association was held this morning for the purpose of discussing the possibility of establishing a compulsory pool to handle the whole of the export of butter and cheese. . , Mr. J. R- Thacker occupied the chair, and there was a very large attendance of members of the association. The meeting, which was not open to the Press, lasted all day. Most or the. argument revolved round the point as to whether the pool should be a Dominion pool or separate North Island and South Island pools. A motion was moved by Mr. Agar as follows: “That this meeting is of opinion that an improved system of marketing is not onlv desirable, but necessary in the interests, of dairy producers, but is of the opinion that a Dominion pool is undesirable, and that the interests of South Island can bo served best by a South Island pool for all dairy produce.; and that we offer to co-operate with the North, both here and in London, but insist upon retaining control of our produce.” , , Mr. Parker moved as an amendment: “That in the opinion of this meeting a Dominion pool is a very desirable thing.” The mover said that, his intention was that the scheme should be a compulsory scheme. On a ballot being taken, the amendment was carried b v 4.5 votes to 41. On the amendment being put as the motion, another ballot was called for. This resulted in the motion being lost by 45 votes to 44. The business was thus left in the air, so to speak. Mr. Bowman then moved, and Mr. Agar seconded, “That a committee of five be set up to meet delegates from the North Island and discuss all tho phases of tho pool and report to the annual meeting of the association.” The motion was carried.
