YOUNG DESPERADO
BOY BUSHRANGER SHOT DECLARED HE WOULD NOT BE TAKEN ALIVE BY TELEGBAPH—PRESS ASSOCIATION. —COPYRIGHT. (Rcc. March 27, 11.15 p.m.) Melbourne, March 27. It now transpires that the man shot by John Maple, ono of the lads who escaped from reformatory homes and essayed bushranging, at Neerim Junction. was a returned soldier, George Woolstencroft. Tho latter sighted Maple taking cover behind a log and rode at him. Swinging his rifle to the level, the boy fired, the shot shattering Woolstencroft’s rifle stock. Woolstencroft attempted to draw his revolver, but received a bullet in the shoulder. As he turned to gallop to cover ho was shot throught tho lung. In view of this the police had issued to them army rifles and were ordered to shoot Maplo on sight, as he was no longer regarded as a misguided youth, but a young desperado. To-day an armed party came upon him near Neerim Junction, and he fired twice. A fusilade was then fired at Maplo and ho fell, shot between the eyes. Ho is not expected to live until ho reaches hospital. * Banks, Maple’s associate, states that the latter told him he intended to parallel the worst exploits of Australian bushrangers, and would not bo taken alive.—Press Assn.
