MEDICAL CONFERENCE

YESTERDAY’S SESSION. The subject mainly dealt with at yesterday’s session of the Medical Conference was that of “Maternal Mortality.” Dr. H. Jellett, of Christchurch, recently Professor of Midwifery at the Dublin University, opened by reading a valuable contribution to the subject. Dr. D. S. Wyllie, Director of Hospitals, of the Health Department, also read a paper, and Dr. Tracy-Inglis, of Auckland, made a similar contribution to the proceedings. An interesting discussion followed, and was resumed last evening. Various cases of maternal deaths were analytically treated, and the technique of medical attendance on maternity cases discussed at length with a view to arriving at what course was the most suitable method of practice in hospitals and private houses, and the conditions under which such practice would be carried out. In connection with the discussion it may be stated that a report on the matter had been prepared by a special committee of the Health Department, and they had referred the question involved to the congress as the most competent authority to deal with it. To-day a council meeting will be held. At 10 a.m. papers on “The Diagnosis and Treatment of Carcinoma of the Colon,” will be read by Drs. Carrick Robertson, S. C. Allen, and W. R. Stowe, while in the evening Dr. A. Clark will read a paper on “Mental Defects of School Children.” If the weather is fine the officers of the Health Department will be tho hosts at a picnic at Somes Island, and at 9 p.m. Dr. and Mrs. W. E. Herbert will entertain the visitors nt a dance at the Cabaret, Gorin" Street.
