LONG-DISTANCE ROAD WALKS
EIGHTY ENTRIES FOR IPUBLIC SERVICE CONTEST.
Eighty entries have been received for the big IOJ-mile iroad walk, arranged by the Public Service officers, which is to take place on Dominion Day (Monday next), and throughout the Departments there is chatter as to the weight and make of boots, shoes, and socks which should bo worn, ns conducive to speed in the pedestrian contest. The walk is to be one from the Post Office at Lower Hutt to the Thorndon Laths, a distance of 101 miles, long enough to test i'he endurance of any of .the competitors who neglect to train. Mr. T. W. Leslie will be the judge in chief, and he Ls calling on Messrs. A. B. Sievwright and Ellis to assist him in seeing that the competitors wtilk fairly. The judges will be in motor-cars in order that they may patrol the lengthy line on tho long track. Sufficient of the slips on the Hutt R<md wall bo removed by tho end .of the week to allow a fair passage for the walkers. The race should finish between 4 and 4.30 p.m.
