GRECO-TURKISH WAR
LEAGUE OF NATIONS ASKED TO z INTERVENE RETREAT OF GREEK ARMY COMMENCED By Telegraph— Press Association-Copyright. London, September 18. The "Daily Express” correspondent at Geneva says that the Greek delegation asked Lord Robert Cecil to request tho League of Nations to intervene in the Greco-Turkish conflict. It is noteworthy that the delegation a week ago .flouted the idea of intervention, but has changed its mind now that the army has failed. It is unlikelv that the League will act until hostilities have ceased.
The "Daily Telegraph’s" correspondent at Smyrna says the retreat has commenced-, and is a bitter disappointment to the Greek public. The news has been held back until the retreat was successfully executed During the battle it was discovered that tho Kemalists far more, abundantly provided with ammunition than expected. Athens, September 18. Tho newspapers in Athens are talking of the possibility of the Government trying to get the Asia Minor question settied diplomatically now that military operations havq ceased. v. Communiques reviewing the victorious advance in Anatolia in July and August say that it is considered inadvisable to pursue the enemy further. Tho army occupied the left bank of the Sangarios River, the operation of crossing being successfully carried out unmolested 1 . The enemy at dawn tried to cross the river, but was attacked and driven back. —Reuter. f -
