The continued long spell of dry weather, unusual at this time of the year, is giving Auckland fruitgrowers and dairy farmers a certain amount of eon corn. As regards the fruit industry, the dry weather will have little effect at present, as the sap in the trees is at present rising, and growth will not lie materially hindered. It is only in trees, lately planted that harm will be noticed. Should the dry spell continue for several weeks longer, however, the effects may be noticed when the setting out commences.—“N.Z. Herald.” The need for some universal system of road signs for the guidance of motorists travelling through strange territory was being discussed at the Retail Motor Traders Conference held in Auckland last week, when the (chairman, Mr. D. Crozier, of Christchurch, ecommended a system in use in California. This consisted of coloured bands, 12in. wide, painted on telegraph or electric power poles, rich route having a specifier! colour. Guilty of a false declaration under the Marriage Act, Alfred Ernest Kearns, with string of aliases, appeared for sentence before His Honour Mr. Justice Sim in the Supremo Court on Saturday. He was not represented by counsel, but ho made a, stirring appeal against imprisonment. "Your Honour,” he said, "I ask for your leniency. I can stand ‘lie clang of prison doors more than the jeering of my acquaintances. But I ask you to consider my wife and children, who egs innocent.” The Crown Prosecutor (Mr. I’. S. K. Macassey) was not impressed. He handed to the Judge the police report, which showed that Kearns had a long "list," in which were included convictions for vagrancy, theft, false pretences, and bigamy.
