CIVIC LEAGUE’S FUND WORK FOR FIFTY MEN REGISTRATION BUREAU ESTABLISHED In a statement made to a Dominion reporter yesterday with reference to the money collected by the Civic League for the purpose of relieving distress among the unemployed, the Mayor (Mr. It. A. Wright, M.P.) said that arrangements had been made whereby men desirous of employment could register their names at the corporation yards, Clyde Quay. Registration, which would begin to-day, would bq carried out between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. under the supervision of Mr. Judd. Work would be found immediately for about fifty men, and preference would naturally bo given to married men with families. It was proposed to immediately proceed with improvements to Wilton Road and the Evans Bay Road, round by the Patent Slip.' The work would be carried out on the co-operative contract system. Mr. Wright stated that applications for work could only be received from residents of Greater Wellington, as the league looked to each municipality to look after its own unemployed. A special meeting of the City Council is to be held on Wednesday afternoon in order to see what work can bo provided. TYPOGRAPHICAL UNION’S ATTITUDE. A letter inviting support to the fund being raised by tho Wellington Civic League for the purpose of relieving unemployment was received by the board of management of the 'Wellington Typographical Union at its meeting on Saturday evening. After careful consideration the following resolution aas agreed to: “That tho secretary notify the league that 450 members of the union have for a number of years subscribed a small amount weekly for the relief of their unemployed members, and while Earnestly desirous of reimoving unemployment and relieving suffering caused through lack of work, we consider that a partial solution of the problem would bo Government subsidy to unions which give unemployment benefit. This method is greatly to be profsrred to haphazard voluntary collections."
