V ice-Reoal. His Excellency the Governor-General has accepted tho office of patron to the "Wellington Acclimatisation Society. The Victoria College Council last night pqesed a motion of sympathy with Professor Tennant, Professor of Education, who is ill. Mr. A. Paisley, M.A., has been awarded a Jacob Joseph scholarship for 1921. This decision was made by the Victoria College Council last night on the recommendation of the Finance and Business Committee. Captain Ernest Charles Dovey, New Zealand Staff Corps, died on Monday at his residence, Hemuera, Auckland, at the age of 52. Captain Dovey was well known throughout New Zealand militarycircles. An old Imperial Army man, he camo to New Zealand in the early days of the defence movement, and held positions as instructor in the mounted service. He took a- leading part in organising the Dominion military tournaments before the war, and on the reorganisation of the force in Sir Alexander Godlev’s timo entered the Staff Corps as a lieutenant. In the early days of the European war he was engaged m preparing troops for the front, and in 1918 was adjutant at Trentham Camp. From that he went to the front as captain of the Staff Corps, and for eomo time wa« commandant at Staples. On his return ho was appointed to the ordnance sraff, and became ordnance officer for the Auckland district. He is survived by Mrs. Dovey.

Mr. Roderick Murchison, a well-known Melbourne banker, and one of the trustees of tho Edward Wilson estate, died on July 5. Ho was born at Goulburn. New South Wales, on July 5, 1848, nnd was the son of a Gundagai squatter. He was not 17 when, on May 1, 1865, he entered the service of the Bank of New South Wales, as a junior clerk at Gundagai.
