A MINE DISPUTE
REDUCTION OF HEWING RATE.
The owners of the Brighton coal mine,, in Otago, have notified the miners of a reduction of 2s. a ton. in the hewing rate as from June 6. In the course of a statement regarding this decision, the secretary of the Miners’ Federation (Mr. JArbuckle) stated that the men concerned, would be directea to stop work if the, mine did not revert io the old rate o. pay by Monday next. He added, that the federation would then decide ‘' xr ’ xe ' ther all miners shall cease work." and suggested that the incident was a breach, of faith on the part of the mine owners. The actual position is that the owners of the mine affected by the reduction, are not members of the Coal Mine Owners Association, and so are not parties to the agreement between the association and the federation. The association has no information regarding the of this mine. The coal mines controlled by members of the Coal Mine Owners . Association are smi being worked under the old agreemeriU which is to remain in force until it is superseded.
