A WONDERFUL RUDDER
(Successful trials were made recently on a West African! river in tho use of a special type of rudder for towing launches. This rudder, which is a British invention, consist of two curved segments partly enclosing tho propeller. By moving these segments in relation to each other, and to tho propoller, the boat can be steered, and it can also be- made to slow down, and reverse without any change in the engine speed. The complete control thus simply obtained 'IS very valuable on vessels which, like tho towing launches mentioned, are manned by natives. The engine is set for tho best speed, and allowed to run continuously at that speed, all the manoeuvring being done by the rudder. Moreover, the segments protect the propeller from damage by floating timber — a point which is of great importance when boats aro used for logging.
