A JAPANESE ADVENTURER
IN ROYVING BOAT 62 DAYS.
A Japanese named Nagi Yamata was charged at the Sydney Central Police Court with being a prohibited immiB Inspector Donoghue, of tho Customs Department, said he went to a Japanese laundry ai Chatswpod and questioned Yamata regarding his passport. Yamata’s replies were unsatisfactory, and he was arrested. Yamata told the inspector that four years ago he and two of bls countrymen were in Singapore, and were desirous of coining to Australia. They built a 30-foot boat, and alternately pulled and sailed to Thursday Island. Tho three men were at sea 62 days, and had to pull most of the way. LUeir provisions consisted of tinned, meat and a tank of water. It was found necessary to call at two islands on the way for the purpose of reprovisioning. During the long journey they encountered some very rough weather, and on arrival at Thursday Island destroyed the boat. They staved at Thursday Island for some time, and later reached the mainland, whore they made for 'lownsville. Ilcio Yamata was questioned, and said he could not speak English, and so would not register. The accused was sentenced to six months’ gaol, the magistrate remarking that he would probably bo sent back to J a pa n.
