SEAMEN’S STOP-WORK MEETING
The monthly meeting of the Seamen’s Union was held in Wellington yesterday. The meeting decided to protest against the action of the Marine Department in declining to jn’osecute the master of the Nikau on the ground that the petroleum regulations, against which he was alleged to have offended were issued only in August last. Members expressed the opinion that if there were extenuating circumstances in the case the consideration of them was a matter for a Magistrate. A complaint was received from the Union Company against the action of the Kakapo’s firemen in delaying the vessel at Wellington. The meeting resolved to leave the matter in the hands of the Headquarters Executive It was pointed out that members of the Seamen’s Union had been disfranchised in ballots taken by the Labour Representation Committee. An attempt to rectify this will be made when a selection ballot in connection with the City Council is held shortly.
