THE TURF
a NOTES AND COMMENTS A BY GiiENCOE. v The Ashburton races have been postI poned to Friday and Saturday, owing to !■- heavy rain.—Press AFsn. 0 Tlio spring meeting of the Wanganui .9 Jockey Olub will open to-day. With the .. exception of the Guineas, in which Hum- „ bug, Little Eiver, and liaceful will compete, class is not a strong feature of the ° meeting. The fields are cf average size. |V Kacing will commence with the Durie Hack Handicap, sis furlongs. ApprenII tices will have charge oi the different runners, and Smoke, who is a-vcrj faßt t beginner, and a winner at Amberley, f may go out favonrito. The Maiden field is a poor one in point of quality. There will he some interest ' in the appearance of Tenterfield, who has f a New Zealand Cup engagement, but his Melbourne form does not make him rut to v" be much good, despite hiß second place c in the Australian Cup. Voluble and All I- Cerise may be well up nt the finish. If he has gone on the light way during his spell Humbug may fcr first choice for : the Guineas, for thero is no doubt he 1 waß the' best two-year-old last season, t Wo have yet to learu whether the Absurd . stock can stay, but to-day's racing should a give an idea, of this. Little Eiver show- „ ed up well in the autumn,' and as he P is olio of the Martian breed he will com- ' mand a big following to-day. Duo will 3 also have plenty of followers, as ho has ' the advantage -of having had a race this i season, in which lie showed winning form. . Domand, who is a half-brother to Client. , showed consistent form last, season. l If I'isher runs up to his National Hurdles form ho Bhould score ill tho 1 Okehu Hurdles, but the Maniopoto gcld- ■ ing is at times moody, though over fences ; he has always shown v.p well. Otauru Kid i has won three-times on end in hack i company, and iB an improving hom. Ngakanui, winner of tho Hack Bteeplechase at Marton, is engaged in a similar event to-day, and may be one of the 1 prime fancies. Ho may encounter most opposition from Mattock, who scored in the ttangitikei SteeplcehaßO' early this' month. . j Oratress may not be quite ready yet, and a similar remark applies to Volo, both of whom are at tho head of tho lißt in the Spring Handicap. Lnder the circumstances, Depredation, who has been racing most consistently of late, may go out. favourite. He will have tho services of Goldfinch, who will take hifci over tho shortest possible course. Tho Putiki Hack Handicap is the hardest problem of the day, for tho six topweights are all very useful, and any one of them iB capable of winning. Tho light-weights Eeem to have the best of matters in tho Flying Handicap, and Egniont Park, Kinsem, and Incomo Bhould all shape well. The first-named won several good races last season, and lie has also showed winning form this season. A I'tcbs Association message from bya* ney states that Ohrysolaus, lame in the Koseliill Spring Stakes, has been scratched for the Metropolitan Handicap, but' not for the Epsom J"! 1111 ';,?; The lior'so is not working, and ifi still under the care of the, veterinary surgeon.
