COUNTER-ATTACKS BY POLES PLANNED BY FRENCH OFFICERS. Paris, August 3. The "Chicago Tribune's" Warsaw correspondent states that two counterattacks,. planned by French officers, are in progress between Brest Litovsk and B'ielish. The Poles, using French heavy artillery, wiped out two strong Red positions. The Russians have crossed the eastern border of Bessarabia, ceded to Rumania bv the Versailles Treaty. "Thousands of Rumanians deserted and fled when they were called to the colours, and are reported to have been interned in Bulgaria.—Aus..N/Z. Cable Assn. Copenhagen, August 3. The Polish Chief of Stuff declares that while the military situation is serious, Poland has sufficient forces to put into action when the decisive moment arrives. A wireless report from Moscow states that the Polish delegates havo only been furnished with the authority- of the Polish Command tk) negotiato an armistice, instead of with mandates from the Polish wliich tho Russians consider essential. The Poles have returned to Warsaw, and hope to renew the negotiations at Minsk to-morrow.— Aus.-N.Z. Cable Assn. SOVIET'S IMPOSSIBLE DEMANDS POLAND IN DEADLY PERIL. (Rec. August 5, 1.10 a.m.) Warsaw, August 4. The Soviet Government demands that the armistice 'and peace negotiations be conducted simultaneously at Minsk on August 5. This is physically impossible to the Polish representatives, who are now journeying into Warsaw, It is evident that the Bolsheviks intend to destroy Poland, and then call it peace. Poland is in deadly peril from enemies within and without. If she collapses the whole structure of Central Europe will be shaken to its foundations, which, are already weak.—"The Times." POLISH SITUATION MUST BE CLEARED r, BEFORE RESUMPTION OF TRADE NEGOTIATIONS. (Rec. August 5, 1.10 a.m.) London, August -i. The "Daily Express-' announces tlmt the Government has decided that there will he no further resumption of trade negotiations with the Soviet delegates in Loudon, pending the clearing of the Polish situation. The, "Express" adds: ''If Russia takes Warsaw, and proceeds to defeat Poland, the Allies will support Poland with geuerals, organisation, guns, fliul munitions.—United
