Tho first, challenge match of tlio season for the New Zealand Hockey Shield took place between Nelson and Auckland on Saturday, Auckland retainini; the shield with a score of 7 tronls to 1. For Auckland uoals were scored by Orice'W), Eobcrtshaw, D. Alexander, and Xf. Acken, and for Nelson by Dee. Lost Saturday saw the finish of the first round of the hockoy season. In yeßtcrday morning's isßue Central were reported «s having defeated United; this; however, was not correct, as the United team won by 2 goals to 1, The championship table, showing the positions of the senior teams to date (each having played nine matches) is as under :—
