AMERICA AND JAPAN
« SERIOUS TROUBLE LOOMING ANTi-JAPANESE SENTIMENT IN CALIFORNIA By Telegraph-Press Asßooiation-Oonyrlirlit New York, July 12. The "'Sew York Globe's" travelling correspondent, Mr. Bruce Blivan, telegraphs from Los Angeles that serious trouble is looming between the United States and Japan. The local antiJapanese sentiment in California is rapidly TJsing to a point where action may socn be taken which will make a continuance of the present cordial relations between the two countries impossible. California already has a law forbidding any Japanese to own land. She is about to pass a law forbidding Japanese even to lease land. More menacing, in the writers opinion, is the possibility of rlo m by Californians against Japanese. The outstanding aspects of the Caiiforman situntion are these: The Japanese, owing to their ability to work harder than white men and to maintain a lower scale of living; will secure the ultimate control of every industry they enter. The law forbidding Japanese to own land is a dead letter. Dummy corporations are formed, with white men as nominal directors; to hold land actually owned by Japanese. The antiJapanese movement in California is furthered by the small white land-owner and the largo ranch-owner, who are glad to employ Japanese workers. Californians claim that, the practice of importing "picture brides" continues, in spite of the assurance of Japan that it would cease. The Japanese birth-rate is so great that Californians claim that the Japanese will soon control Cali-fornia.—Aus.-N.Z. Cable Assn. IMMIGRATION SITUATION BEING INVESTIGATED. San Francisco, July 12. The Immigration Committee of the lederal House of Representatives has begun an investigation into the Japanese immigration situation in California. (senator Pholan gave evidence • that Japanese are being smuggled into California from Mexico—Aus.-N.Z. Cable Assn.
