A COSTLY TROUBLE
NEGLECT TO PRESERVE WOODBLOCKS. Neglect of wood-block tarring is goiiii» to cost the city many thousands or pounds in the near future. The destrue-' tion due to allowing the blocks to bo fully exposed to the soaking rains ofwinter is now apparent in many'places, and at some" points tho passage of a heavy vehicle causes the underlying water to spurt up between tho blocks, only to soak back tgain when fho prcs* sure passes. This soakago is fairly general, and in tho process the wood-Mocks naturally expand. In so doing they displace the concrete kerbiug from tho' vertical, which accounts for the down* ward slope towards tho road of tho topi, of tho kerb-blocks. Several hundreds of pounds have already been expended in,; rectifying this trouble. Last year thisi' was done by lifting some of the side-, ohunuel blocks, 'and removing a section' of them to enable tho kerb to 1m ■ straightened, but recently men were seen j in tho act of chipping them level—which], does not euro the trouble. In Feathers-: ton Street the kerbs are being forced from th» vertical by the swelling woodblocks.
