BILLIARDS CHAMPIONSHIP
4 Yesterday was an off day in .the New Zealand amateur billiards championship, there being no day play, and only one game in the evening, when Roberts, of Auckland, met Williams, of AVolliiigton, for the privilege of contesting m the semi-finals. At the commencement both players showed considerable nervousness, and neither seemed able to settle down. Roberts 'was a little more forhmato in his leaves, and was able to register 100 points to his credit before Williams scored 60. From this oh the Wellington man did better, and with one or two medium-sized breaks, caught his opponent, and managed to reach 300 nearly fifty ahead of Roberts. This .latter player gavo nothing like the exhibition that ho did in his first game against Tucker. Ho had the appearance of playing too hastily and rather carelessly at times. Some of hie individual sbots were particularly good, but too many of his breaks ended prematurely from easyscoring positions. At 500 both players were again level, only some two or three pointa separating them. At 600 Roberts had a lead of twenty. When Williams had reached 603, and'his opponent stood at 611, the former was most unfortunate in committing a foul. A little later ho again unwittingly touched a ball with his sleeve. These two happenings gave Roberts a decided advantage, and spoilt Williams's chances! Tho game ended: Roberts, 650; Williams, 614. Tho best breaks were: Williams, 24, 22, 20, 27, 22. Roberts, 22, 23, 23, 20 23. This afternoon Fredatovich will play his clubmate Roberts in tho semi-finals and to-night Siedeberg will play AVarrcn. .
