A Press A|socintinn message from Auckland states that General Birdwood arrived there yesterday afternoon, and was enthusiastically welcomed at tho station by returned soldiers. He was accorded a civic reception in tho Town HaK last night, and in tho course of his speech said, that from what he had seen and heard during his travels ho was of the opinion that New Zealand hud treated the 'returned soldiers well.
The Hon. 0. Samuel was yesterday re-elected, without opposition, to the Chairmanship of Committees in the Legislative Council. In proposing the appointment Sir Francis Bell (Leader of tho Council) paid a warm tribute to tho value of Mr. Samuel's services in the past. The Hon. J. G. W. Aitken, who seconded the motion, also praised Mr. Samuel's work.
The Hon. Mark Cohen and the Hon. E. H. Clark were yesterday sworn in as members of the Legislative Council.
Mr. Niidson, of the office staff of tho Stratford Borough Council, has been uppointed to the portion of assistant clcrk fe tho Hutt Borough Council.
On resigning his position as buyer for Messrs. George and Kersley's fancy departments, Mr. D. J. Rojers, who is proceeding to Palmerston North, was presented by the staff with a leathor bag and handsome piece of silver plate. Mr. H. P. Wyatt, superintendent of the Christckurch Telegraph Office, will retire on pension at the end of the present month, states a Press Association messase from Christchufch. Mr. Lan M'Laren, a well-known English actor, who appeared in AVellingtoi> last with the "Lightnin'" Company, is spending a few days in the city prior to leaving for San Francisco by the lofua. Mr, A. T. Mark-man, Acting-Secretary of the Po3t and Telegraph Department, is on a business visit to Christchureh. He will return this morning'. Mr. T. Forsyth, a member cf the Repatriation Board, on behalf of the staff, made a presentation yesterday afternoon to Mr. Claude Batten, Repatriation Officer, to mark the Hatter's recent marriage. The present, which was a handsome silver salver, was accompanied with gcod wishes for the future happiness and prosperity of Mr; and Mrs. Batten. Mr. Batten replied in suitablo terms. Mr. Anderson, of the Commonwealth and Domiii'on Line's Wellington office, if confined to his heme owing to slight illness.
