Tldo Mayor pf Christchurch (Dr. , Tnackcr) recently cabled to Mr. Storey (Premier of New South Wales) urging him to assist in obtaining tlra removal of the Federal Government's cuibmff) on tiie import of New Zealand potatoes. Dr. Thaoker declared that Christchurch was much in need of coal, and that if steamers from Newcastle were sent with Iroin ,'JOOO to 4000 tons of coal largo consignments of good potatoes could be <Uspatched on the return trip. Mr. Storey apparently Kent on the mes-. sage to Mr. W. M. Hughes (Federal Prime Minister), who replied that owing to the danger of introducing powdery scab into Australia and the necessity of protecting . the Australian potato industry the Ooveriiment was unable to allow the admission of New Zealand potatoes for food purposes.
