By a combination of the Nationalists auj Labour 'Parties the Smuts Ministry narrowly escaped defeat on the cost-of-living question, the voting being 54 to 52. Before the division Gcnera-1 Smuts made a dramatic appeal to Labour not to be misled by tho Machiavellian moves of the Herzogites and forsake the Government. The division was the first real test of tho opposing parties' strength, the .Nationalists and Labourites voting solidly Against .the South African Party. General Smuts, in tho course of a speech, denounced tho unholy aljionce of Nation' alists and Labourites. The Nationalist leaders admitted that they disapproved of Labour's food policy, but were determined to vote for the motion, in order to turn out the Government,—Aus.-N.Z. Cable Assn.
