ASSESSMENT OF DUTY
PROTEST AGAINST AUSTRALIAN REGULATION ,\ t VALUES BASED ON PRE-WAR EXCHANGE RATE By Telegraph-Press Assooiatlon-Oopyright (Rec, June 22, 9.55 p.m.) London, June 2l'. There is a growing volume of protests from Anglo-Australian commercial circles and from Fre|ich and Italian manufacturers regarding the Australian Customs regulation charging duty on imported foreign goods at a value based on the pre-war rate of exchange. London houses of Australian importing flrniß agree that the effect has been to force them to buy from English importing firms instead of buying direct from French and Italian manufacturers, .because it is cheaper to pay the wholesalers' profit. They also contend that
the regulation asso'sts neutral countries which possess a favourable exchange rate, because they do not carry war burdens. Cables from Australia show a considerable cancellation of orders until the matter is settled.—Au6,-N.Z. Cable Ae«n.
