The Prime Minister had to leave his office yesterday morning, being slightly indisposed. He was able to come down lato in the afternoon to attend to urgent business, and he had by that time recovered considerably. He will be at his office as usual to-day.
Mr. J. D. Gray, Secretary of External Affairs, arrived in Auckland yesterday morning from Samoa. He is duo in Wellington to-day.
In connection with the appointment accepted by Mr. M. J. Kennedy with the Wellington Gas Company, Limited, and announced in yesterday morning's paper wo are advised that Mr. Kennedy will not assume his official duties for some months, and that tho appointment will in no way affect the position of the present secretary, Mr. J. H. Helliwell, who enjoys tho fullest confidence of the board.
Mr. A. B. Taylor, a clerk in the Treasury at AVellfngton, has been appointed to be a clerk in the Treasury at Samoa. He will be leaving for Apia in a day or two.
Mr. Duncan F. Bauchop, general manager for Leyland Motors, Ltd., left for the 60uth last night.
Mr. Charles Todd, of Messrs. Todd and Co., auctioneers, Invercargill, expired suddenly in his office yesterday (reports the Press Association. Heart failure was the cause of death. Deceased was prominent in football and rowing circles. He leaves a widow and seven children.
Tho death occurred at Hastings last week of Mr. Itobert Frederick Law-ton, who took a prominent part in the affairs of the Eureka Druids Lodge. He had occupied all tho offices of (he lodge, and had just passed through tho chair of District President. The late Mr. Lawton ■ leaves a widow and a grownup family, comprising Mr. George Lawton, Kilbirnie; Mrs. J. Harvey, llona Bay; Mrs. C. Howard, Lower Hutt; Mrs, W. Fryer, Muritai; and Mrs. A. W. Bradley, Whangarci.
Mr. and Mrs. Itobert Harkness, who will bo remembered in connection with the Chapman-Alexander Mission, arrived in Auckland on Friday.
Mr. W. H. Newton, for thirty years headmaster of Thames school, and recently appointed headmaster of Grey Lynn school, was on Friday night farewelled by tho school committee, staff, and scholars of Thames Central school. On their behalf Mr. E. C. Burns, a member of the Board of Education, presented the departing headmaster with a gold watch, suitably inscribed.
