Dargaville, June 18, The mailboat Wairua had a narrow escape from being destroyed by fire while coming to Dargaville this morning, When passing Mount Rex last evening smoke was noticed coming froin the coal bunkers, and the crew put the lire out. When passing Tokatoka fire again broke out. The engineer pluckily stuck to the engines, although• the heat from the fire .was intense, and brought the burning ■ boat to the Dargaville Wharf,; where the . fire brigade was.called out. '!he firemen .. had to go into the hold, and after some hours they got the fire under control. The fire left only the outer skin, vhich ,' was charred. .Half m inch, more end it ' would have burned through, had there been a draught, and there would have teen no hope of saving the vessel
