j MANY RESIGNATIONS LAST YEAR. The average nunib?r of men employed in the New Zealand Railway Department last vear was (says the "Haihvay heview'*') 12,391, against 13,002 for the previous year. . Thirty-four members of the Second Division were promoted to the First Division. Seven hundred and sixty members of the .permanent staff resigned, 50 retired 011 superannuation, 2-19 died, 87 were dismissed, and 628 cngaged. The sum of <£13,205 was paid under (ho Workers' Compensation for Accidents Act during the year to members who sustained injuries in the execution of their duty. . The employees of the Department are distributed as follows:— General 601 Traffic Maintenance 3,817 Locomotivo 3,878 Total 12,391
