HIDE AND TALLOW SALES
The fortnightly sales of hides and tallow were held yesterday by the various brokers:— Messrs. Djlgety and Co. roport that they catalogued' a . good laesortment of all classcs. As usual, all linos of hides suitable for tanners' requirements were selected at the Government scheduled rates, and the remainder, submitted to auction. The latter 'met with keen competition, and sold at an advance of from Id. to id. on last sale's rates. Tallow showed an t improvement, and advanced about Bs. per cwt. The New Zealand Loan .and Mercantile Agency Ob., Ltd.., report that the bulk of the catalnjue was taken by tanners at Government Rohedulo priceß prior to tho sale. The balance of the sataloguo , was eagerly competed for at' satisfactory prices. Vory little tallow was offered, and prices showed a sharp rise on last sale's rates. Messrs. Levin and Co, state that they submitted a cata®:ue comprising four hundred- and and calfskins, most of which were allocated to tanners at .Government schedule prices. Bidding was animated for all lots comprising mostly superior cow and'ltips not 6elcctea by tanners, and in consequence all lots were sold. Super cow changed. hands at 3d. per lb. above the Government maximum prices, whilst kips and inferior sorts sola at an advance of from Id. to 3d. per lb. upon previous sale's rates. Shippers ana local, manufacturers competed freely fpr tallow, .with the result that best lines advanced fully 10s'. per cwt. upon prices ruling at the salo held three W*eks ago. / Messrs. Murray, Roberts and Co. report that they offered a catalogue of 600 hides and 150 calfskins. Several lines of gocd cowhides, which had-"iiot ■ been selected by tanners,'brought prices in'excess of the scheduled rates, a lot of 521b. cows making 12Jd. per lb. Ox hides, under competition, also fcxccedcd schedule by Jd. to 13d. per lb. The bulk of the best ox hides were, however, taikeu by tanners at Government prices. Good yearlings were indemand at prices up to Id. over last sale's rates. Tallow was In better request at advanced prices.
Tho New Zealand Farmers' Co-op. Distributing Co., Ltd..' report that competition was spirited, in .some instancos. The prices realised were good, some llnqa 'bringing fully Id. to Ud.'above last sale. The tanners again exercised the option given them under Gazette notice, and sccured 'considerable lines of calfskins and hides. The demand for tallow was much more pronounced. lind competition was extremely Keen. • . .
The Wairarapa. Farmers' Co-operative As•emotion, Ltd., in which isincorporated the United Farmers' Co-operative Association, report that tanners exercised their right m select hides and calfskins under the Government schedule; the remainder put up to auction realised satisfactory Prices. slippy and inferior hides and calfskins made higher prices tnan at previous sale, fallow met with good competition at an advance of ss. to 7s. 6d. per cwt. for casks and ss. for .tins; market arm.
Abraham and Williamfe, Ltd., report that tanners took the majority of tho hides ..at schedule rates, and there was very keen competition for the balance some lines of which exceeded the schedule rates by id. to Id. per lb.
