The ferry steamer Jlararoa left Wellington. last night at 7.45 o'clock, and under ordinary circumstances should have ar- | rived at Lytteiton this morning at about 9.30 or 10 o'clock, but owing to bad coal and the indisposition of a fireman it *w aß found necessary at 4 o'clock this morning to cut out. two of the single-end boilers. In conscQuence the speed "was considerably reduced, and the vpseel reached port about an hour and a- half behind schedule time. .THE COUNTY OF ANGLESEA. Once looked'upon as a very smart type of sailer, the County of Angiesea, # in 1911, was dismantled for use as a hulk in Auckland. She served in this capacity until July 27, 1918, when she was towed to Port Chalmers by the Te Anau to be refitted as a sailer by the Union Company. This work has now beeh completed, and. the veßßel. under the name of the Gladbrook, has regained all her former smartness, With regard to her refitting, the Dunedin "Star" states:—"All the original decks, ceilings, etc., fore and eft, were cleared out entirelv, now docks substituted. The whole of the work of reconstructionincluding the making of tooinasts, yards, sails, etc.—were executed at Port Chalmers, and, as is .the usual custom with the Union Company, everything was- made of the best material, and put m first-class order. A large house was built on the dock for the acrommodation of the crew, and, onHhe whole, those who know sailing ships and their equipment look upon the Gladbrook as one of the finest- sailing ves-Eels-afloat to-day. and Port Chalmers people must feel ratlier proud at seems the result of their own handwork in the con-'-version of a coal hulk to an up-to-dato sailing ship." • . . , ~ ■ Captain G. B. Corby has been placed in command of the Gladbrook. which is now loading a cargo for San Francisco, for which port sho is expected to sail at the end of the present week. He will have associated with liim Mr. H. S. Oolhcr (first mate) and Mr. D. M'Leish. The Gladbrook has a gross tonnage of 1112. and her measurements are:—Length. 214 ft. 4in.; breadth, 35ft. 21n.; depth, 22ft. Bin. THE JTATJNQANtiI. She is flue here about January 15, and is due to sail for England on January 19, The C. and D. Line's Port Sydney left port yesterday for Port Said, via Colombo. A particularly smart performance was put up by the Wanganui steamer Invercargill recently. The little vessel left Wellington at IP p.m. on a .Itond.iy jiisht, proce"ded to PM.on. a distance of 54 mileß, picked up a full cargo of sheen,,and was back tied up at Potone Wharf, commencing discharge, IX hours lo.ter—a very 6ninrt, norformanco indeed. Tho Anal meeting was held at Glasgow recently between representatives of Jtessrß. John kSlater, Ltd., shipowners. London, and Messrs. Murdoch- arid Murray,. Ltd.. shipbuilders. Port Glasgow, for tho purpose o. completing tho transfer of tho business of Hhe latter firm to the former. The saletakes effect as from October 1 last, and i henceforth tho shipyard will be owned and operated bv Messrs. John Slater, Ltd. Tho bueiness of Mossrs.
