THE MEAT TRADE
MAELBOROUGH STOCK SEXT TO WELLINGTON. ,
The development of a Wellington industry far the preserving of pigs, she«p, and cattle has meant that Marlborough stocks of fat sheep have been drawn upon of late to the extent of about 4.000, which have been forwarded to Wellington for the company's purposes. The mattr.r wag referred to at the last meeting of the Farmers' Union (states the Marlborough "Express"). ' It was agreed' that although the prices received by the individual farmers were good nut! in accordance-with the regular market rate, it wai to be regretted that fat stock should be sent out of the district in this manner in preference to being forwarded to the Picton works for freezing purposes. It was realised that the greateir the number of sheep put through the Picton works the better. it would be for the district, from all viewpoints; whereas any serious decrease might mean enhanced charges and a lack of facilities. One of the remedies for this diversion of stock to Wellington was considered to be the opening of the Picton wbrlcs at an earlier date tlrnn usual. The union had previously made represen-tations-to have this 'brought about, find the secretary was instructed to renew the union's pica with a view to operations being commenced earlier next season. The Picton works opened on Monday (adds the "Express"). The union has been ddvised by thp manager that the visit of nn overseas vessel at an early date should clear the works of all frozen meat in store.
