Mr. W. H. Field (Otaki) has given notice to ask the Government if they have communicated witli the Government of the United States of America with respect to the refusal of the latter Government to continue , purchasing New Zealand hemp; and, if eo, with what results? He,mentions that it is reported that?the American Government's determination ' in -this connection is l dub'to their having pledged theriiselves to take the wliole of the output of sisal from Mexico, and'it is certain'that if the American market is closed to New Zealand hemp all or nearly nil the flaxmills ;must',close down, and-many hundreds' of men will be thrown out of cmployinent.
