TRADE FOR SOLDIERS
WORKSHOPS AT ROTORUA,
For some time past the Defence Department lias been -gathering data with the object of establishing aii orthopaedic workshop for the teaching of disabled, soldiers such trades as they are individually fitted for. _ The information has now'b.eon obtained, and a tender lias been accepted for the erection of workshops on Pukerua Hill, Botoriia, close to King George Hospital. The plans provide for four separate buildings. In one of those the plumbing; and electrical workshops '50 feet by "24 feet), saddlery and splintmaking (17 feet by 24 feet), as well as handicraft room (40 feet by 24 feot) will be situated, and. a verandah ten feet wide will run the length of the building. In another building accommodation will be provided for bootinaking, tailoring, cigarette-making, hairdressing, and plaster-oast-making trades, as ivcll as a photographic studio and attendant dark room for the developing of plates. Each room will be 14 feet by 12 feet, and a verandah, 8 feet wide, will run the length of the building. A third building will contain tho carpentry and basket-making shops, the dimensions being 60 feet by 25 feet. The fourth structure is whero the blacksmiths, acetylene welders, painters', and enamelling shops will be housed. The blacksmiths' shop will be 15 feot by 12 foet, and tho whole building will be constructed of brick, with concrete floors. Provision is also to be made in the building, which will be centrally situated, for ample lavatory accommodation for all tho shops. The threo first-named buildings will bo of a good frame typo, with opon roofs, the covering of which will be three-ply patent roofing. The approximate cost of the four structures is £3000, and tho successful contractors aro Messre. Auger and Norris, of Lower Hutt, who are at present erecting the new wards for King' George Hospital at Kotorua. _ Tho plans and specifications for the building were prepared by, and tho work is to be carried out under the supervision of, the Director of Works, Colonel E. H. Hiley.
