COMBATING CATTLE TICK
FARMERS AND DEPARTMENT. Tho proposed regulations for preventing the spread-of the cattle tick were stated, on Wednesday, by some members of the Auckland Farmers'' Union executive to be unnecessary. The chairman, Mr. J. Boddie,. reported that as a 'result "of a .conference- . with Dr. C. J. Rcakos, Director-Gen-eral of the Department of Agriculture, the executive had succeeded in having the gazetting of the proposed regulations deferred for six months, so that full information and' tlie general opinion of the farmers on the "matter could be obtained by the Farmers' Union. Mr. S. C. Jounneaux said that a meeting of tlie Whangarei branch had been held last week to consider the matter. The North Auckland people not in favour of having certain districts gizetted "proscribed areas." but they were prepared to assist the Stock Department in preventing the spread of the tick.. He said that large, new cattle yards were about to bo built.at Whangarei, and provision had been made to have a cattle dip constructed at the yards. People in the south who- wanted cattle from the north and were afraid of the tick, could have them dipped, but there wore 'strong. objections to stringent regulations being enforced in certain prescribed areas. In the event ui North Auckland being gazetted a prcsciibod area there would be strong agitation'■ to have tho whole of the North Island brought under the same rngulations. After further general cFiffiiission, iii which most of tho speak«. - s agreed that there was little fear of tiii tick spreading in normal seasons, the report was sidopted.
