BALLOTEDM ! NUMBER OF APPEALS HEARD The First Wellington Military Service Board sat in the city yesterday. The board consists of Messrs. D. &. A. Cooper, S.M. (chairman), D. M'Laren, and G. Williams. . I Leave till the April draft was given Edward Burch, grain merchant, who desired au extension of time for busir>3B3 reasons. The board partly heard, and then adjourned "an appeal by Patrick Rogers, railway fireman. Leave till January was allowed Alfred S. Flack, carpenter. Miramar Borough Engineer. The Miramav Borough Council appealed for the exemption of its engineer, Thomas Overbury Fox. Frederick Townsend, Mayor of Miramar, said that Fox had been the borough engineer for' six years. He was responsible for the sewerage system and water supply, and the engineering work in general. In addition the Town Clerk had gone to the front, and Mr. Fox had taken up that work also. He was now the only executive officer of the borough, and he could not be replaced. Decision was reserved sine die. An appeal by Henry Lockyer Mitchell, Customs clerk, Kelbunij which had been partly heard at a previous sitting, was adJQUrned till Tuesday. ' A Soldier on Active Service, Leslie William Le Cren, a soldier on active service, was appealed for by his mother, who wished to have him returned to New Zealand. It was stated that Mrs. Le Cren had lost her only other son and her Irasbaud at" the'front. Leslie William Le Cren had been wounded, and was seriously ill. The hoard decided to recommend that the soldier be returned to' New Zealand. Sydney Jacobs, clerk, Kelburn, was appealed for by his employers, Joseph Nathan and Co., and the case was adjourned sine die. Edgar Viucent Sheppard, and Lear Redpatb, waterside workers, were given leave till January. Surprise for an Appellant. Arnold Collett, motor garage proprietor, Lowor Hutt, asked for three months' extension of ; leave. The board iniformed appellant that 'ho was not to' go into camp till the March draft. The appeal was therefore dismissed. Decision was reserved sine dio in; the caso of Charles Jones, dairy farmer, Pahautanui. A furthei adjournment was made in tlw case of Bichardi A. Mctcalf, commercial traveller. Undue hardship was the ground relied on by Thomas. James Harvey, clerk; Hataitai. The board reserved decision. i Only Surviving Son. George Harold Coster, shepherd, an only surviving son, had an appeal allowed under the "only surviving son" clause. . ' William Walter Andrews, a Kilbirnio driver, appealed on the ground df undue hardship. Tho appeal was dismissed, but leave till January was given*. Decision was reserved in the case of Michael Henry M'Cabe, waterside worker, who appealed on the ground of hardship. Reserved Decisions. The following decisions were given in cases heard on Wednesday:—E. T 0. Downard, application by Public Trustee for indefinite leave from camp, no recommendation; Timothy'O'Gorman, mother's appeal for return from the ifront, recommendation that he be returned on indefinite leave; Victor L. •Tones, application for extension of leave, no recommendation; J. P. Patterson, dairyman, Miramar, adjourned sine die. The board will sit again to-day.
