When accused collected accounts he was in the habit of paying the sums received mlo Ihe office, eitlier at. night or in the morning. On July i, 1916, accused paid m an amount of ,61 7s. Gd. on account of Tnnley. On June 12, 1911), he paid in a csuni of 2s. Gd., which the counterfoil | pt' the receipt-book showed had been paid by Mrs. Besant. There was no record of the sum of £o owing bv Mr. Gapes having been paid in. Ail amount of JUG 2 lGs. 7d. was paid into the bank on September 2(1, 1917, and a cheque for JES from Gapes had been included in that sum. No credit for Gapes's amount then appeared on the books, and witness could only assume that the, cheque had been cashed. On September 27 accused paid in as. on account of Gnues, and the counterfoil of the receipt-book showed a payment of that amount. The total indebtedness of the accused to the board was £13 as., and on July 2:1, when proceedings were taken, that amount was paid to Ihe board on accused's behalf. .Detective-Sergeant Scott stated that when arrested accused remarked, "I have been expecting it." Accused pleaded guilty, and was committed lo the Supreme Court for sentence. Bail was reuewed in the sum of £30. OTHER CASES. KiohaidHonldesworth, for whom Mr. 11. V. U'Leary appeared, was remanded until August 7 on a charge that on .lulv ■! he caused to be posted a postal package containing a dangerous substauce, namely, matches. f''or insobriety, Mary Sprowell was sentenced lo fourteen days' hard labour, mid Donald Matheson was remanded for a week's medical treatment.
