E. Murpliy, M.A., 8.C0m., ■ LL.11., has hneii appointed lecturer in j economics at Victoria College. Mr. Murpliy is at present; a partner in the legal firm of M'lntyre and' Murphy, Feilding. A cable messngo was received in Mnatertou on Tuesday, announcing the death in England of Mr. Erl Williams, youngest soil of tho late Mr. T. C. Williams, and of Mrs. Williams, of Wellington. The deceased, who was thirty-two years of age, left for England over two years ago, and after serving ill--0 llyi'.ig corps joined tho motor service. The cause of death was influenza iind nneumonia. Mr. Williams was married to a daughter of Mr. C. F. Vallanee, of Kahumingi, and leaves a family ot tlireo young children. The Rev. J'\ U. Buckingham, a retired Baptist minister, died on Monday nt Tamaki. Mr. Buckingham eaiuo to Now Zealand about fourteen years ago from Ipswich, Quconslaud, where, ho held the Baptist pastorate. Previously ho had been minister of the South Melbourne Baptist CliuiT.li. 11l this country he held s'irccKsivelv tho Bantist charges at, Nelson, Oaiua'ru, and Thames, retiring fror the latler church about four and a half years ago. Mr. Buckingham about twelve years ago married Miss Peters, a missionary from India, by whom he is survived. Mr. A. .13. Speakman, late of the Hud-dart-Rarker Company's services, died at Auckland on Friday. Mr. Speakman was well known in shipping circles and to the travelling public some years ago, when he was purser on a. number of tho company's steamers. Deceased, who bad been about twenty years in the company's employ, was 39 years of age. He leaves a, widuw and one son. The Commonwealth Acting-Minister of Defence (Mr. Wise) has announced that the vacancy caused by the elevation of 1 Brigadier-Generpl T. W. Glasgow, C.8., | C.M.G., D.5.0., to tho command of the First Australian Division would be filled by Lieutenant-Colonel S. C. E. Herring, D.5.0., of New South Wales, who would bo granted the rank of brig-adier-general. The Commonwealth Government had conveyed to Major-General Walker, formerly in command of tho First Division, whose return to the Imperial Army had alreadv been announc- ! etl, its appreciation of the excellent services rendered by liini during his long and distinguished association with the Australian Imperial Forces, The following resignations were accepted at yesterdays meetins of the Education 1 Board:—Mrs. M. Winslow, American Consul- , General, has received advice that his late secretary, Sergeant S. D. Ilill, has been accidentally killed. Tho late soldier was a r.ativo of Kentucky, U.S.A., and was tho , first American to enlist from- Auckland , under his own nationality. He left ; Auckland for camp exactly a year ago J last Monday, tho day that the news of his death was received. He sailed with tho Thirtieth Reinforcements. The late J Sergeant Hill came to New Zealand from ' Kentucky about two and a half years j ago, and had been with Mr. Winslow as secretary for about sixteen months, i Mr. C. C. Ketlo, who lias resigned the position of senior Stipendiary Magistrate j in Auckland on account of ill-health, has 3 adjudicated in the position of tho nortli- , ern city for the past fourteen years. He j was appointed to tho Bcneli in IS9O, and t sat in New Plymouth as District Judgo 3 and Stipendiary Magistrate for Tarav naki and Wanganui districts, to which ; circuit tho district of Wairarapa was - later added. Two years later ho took up p headquarters at Wajigauui, where, yi 5 addition to magisterial duties, he held > tho position, of registrar to tho Supremo j Court. He, in ISIJO, was appointed Senior Magistrate at Auckland, and lie also t acted the District Court Judge for tho Waikalo and Thames districts until tho abolition of the district courts there, when Hamilton was added to the Su.preme Court circuit. Mr. Kettle was notably painstaking in his magisterial methods. Ho exercised an almost paternal interest 1 and care in .the administration of justice I that came within his purview, and took .. a large part in obtaining the new magis--3 trate's court in Auckland and m direct- - in" its appointments. About twelve a months ago failing health Tendered it necessary for him to undergo an operation, anil since that timo he has been in ". hospital. His retirement will take ellect g as from July 31.
