FACTORY MANAGERS' AND THE WAR
•Protest against their con- • . SCRIPTION. The question of securing exemption from military service of factory managers'(briefly referred to in a Press Association message) was discussed at noma o ii. r , 0 meeting of the couth Island Dairy Association. Mr. David Ward said that managers were being called up in the ballot and inexperienced men were likely to bo left to carry on the work. A military service board in the south had stated positively that the exemption of factory Managers, if eligible, could not be cui-fiide-.ed beyond the rod uf the season, which was-, now closing. Most of the managers in the south would be called up within the next two or threo months. Mr. . Parker (Brighton) said that Ilia military authorities considered that cheese-making was not an essential industry, but could that be admitted in face of the fact that 385,000 crates of cheese were in th» cool stores at the present time? Cheese was most essential for the soldiers, and a manager was. doing greater service to the country, in his ordinary capacity than he could liossibly do as a soldier. Mr. W. M. Singleton (Government Assistant Supervisor of Dairying) stated that the Government quite realised that, clicese'making was an essential industry and that a certain number of factory managers must be kept in the counLry. •After further discussion it was agreed to protest against the continual conscription of competent dairy factory manupew nod first &.«iistii, nta in ipposition to the Efficiency Bonr.Vs finding tlmt dairying was an essential industry, and to recommend that immediate steps be taken to ensure that enough men 'be left "<o carry, on the- industry. ' It was further agreed to request the Minister of Defend, to give prompt attention to the matter, and to urge a rehearing of recent cases where appeals were dismissed.
