Reference was made by tho Hon. A. If. Myers, Minister of Customs and Munitions, (luring an address at tho laying of the foundation stone of tho works of tho New Zealand Fertiliser Company, T« rapapa, on Wednesday, to tho need for an increased supply of fertilisers for tho Dominion in order to ineroaso production from the land. The Minister stated that during 1913 and 1914 fertilisers, Tallied at ,£377,422 and „C512,VJ3, were imported, find had tho requisite tonnage been available there was littlo doubt that importations would have continued to increase in a high ratio. The Bupply of manures from overseas, however, had steadily decreased during tho post three vears, the importations for 1915, 191G, mid 1917 being JUK.oSI, J!3i2.- • r >Bo, and .C325.7G2 respectively. At tho present time, notwithstanding the vitalnecessity for increasing tho output of our primary products, the Dominion was actually importing less manure than in tho last years of peace. The figures ho had quoted wore a strong argument in favour of the encouragement of homo production of fertilisers. Home production would mean a great saving of "badlyneeded tonnnge.
