Tlie Bank of England discount rate was on Tamiary 2, 1914. reduced from 5 to 4J Dor cent., on January 'Li. it was reduced to 4 Der cent., and on tannary 23 to 3 per cent. On July 30 the rate was raised to 4 per cent., mi July 31 it was raised to 0 per cent., and en August 1 H was furthor advanced to 10 per cent. Ou August 6 tho rate was reduced to 6 per cent., on Augußt 7 it was further reduced to 5 per cent., on July 13, 1916, it was raised to G per cent., on January 12, 1917. it was r°duecd to 5J per cent., and on April i it was further reduced to 5 per cent. OPEN MARKET lUTES. Tho open market dhcount rate for three months' bills is i\ per cent., as compare'] with 3i Dcr cent, last week and 4 tier ;(!»>,. last year. Short loans are quoted at 3J per cent., as against 3J per cent, last week and 49 ,per cent, last year.

Some supplies of Irish make arc very large. Oheoso.-Scarce, but plenty is being manufactured. It is expected that fair supplies will bo available from July onward. THE METAL MAftKETS.
