An important conference,«as held in Mastorton to-day ia connection with tho proposed reconstruction of ;lio bridge over the Waingavra River, to cost approximately ,£15,0110. The whole of the local authorities ii; Hμ district have been cited to contribute towards the cost, and all of them, with iwo exceptions, have objected io. the allocution.
The conference to-uny wj held at the suggestion of Mt. L. Q. Beid, S.M., who has ken appointed lioyal Commissioner to allocate the proportions of cost. Delegates to the conference vera emphatic in the opinion that the principle of compelling focal authorities .who aro not immediately concerned in a work to contribute towards the cost was wrong, and was capable of extension until local government would become farcical.
After considerable discussion, in which Ihe I'eatheraton, Marlinbor&ugh, Greytown, Cnrterton, Ciistlepoint, Maurieeviile, and other delegates expressed themselves strongly, the conference decided that nothing oould be done, consequently the Commission will prooeed, and Mr. Heid, S.M., 'has fixed June 24 as tho opening dale of the inquiry.
