V.C. FOR SPLENDID EXPLOIT. London, May 4. The Victoria Cross has been awarded to Sergeant S. K. M'Dougall, of the Australian Infantry. When the first I enemy wave entered ouv hue, bergeant i M'Dougall, on fho flank, charged the enem/s second iravo single : handed witii the bayonet. Ho killed seven men and captured a machine-gun, which he turned against tho enemy. Firing it from the hip, he inflicted further casualties, and routed the remainder o? the wave. M'Dougall then attacked _ the first wavo at close quarters, urtil his ammunition was exhausted, then seized. a bayonet and charged tho enemy again, killing three men and also an officer who was about to kill one of our officers. He then used a Lowis machine-gun against the enemy, killing many, and enabling us to capture thirty-three pris-oners.—Aus.-N.Z. Cablo Assn. |
