4 IN THE MATTER 01' EDUCATION. At the Victoria College Council last evening a circular letter was read from the New Zealand Educational Institute requesting that the serious consideration of members be given to the need for improvements in Hie education system of the Dominion. Sir Robert Stout said that the two pressing needs were technical education to increase the wealth ami the efficiency of the nation, and education of the souls of the people—teaching them civics, loyalty to our civic rule, nnd brotherhood amongst ourselves. We had no hope- at the present time of becoming a manufacturing nation. The main thing for us was to train our people to tho industries that lay tit 'heir doors. More should bs done in the way of training and educating farmers. AVe needed to train our pcoplo in civics. We had continual struggles among ourselves —lights between Capital and Labour, and so on. We needtd to )>e trained to see what a true democracy means. Good work was Ming dono in this direction in America. Tho council set" up a joint committee, of the council and the Professorial Board to inquire into the educational needs of the- college.
