DISntESSING TRAGEDY. Sj 'i'eSsgvapa—Pi'ess Aosoci.iton. ' \ Oamaru, January 1.'.. A distressing drowning fatality occurred on Oamani beach it noon today. Walter Brown, aged 15, son of Walter Brown, a, railway suriacenian, ot Christciuirch, 'who was lishiug with ; his .cousin, Andrew Medcaif, fell into tho surf otf the sform-water discharge pipe. The boy Medcalt pluckily dived to the rescue, but was unsuccessful, and got into difficulties himself. A younger sister of Medcaff waded in up to her shoulders and brought her brother on to tho shore. The body of Brown was recovered by- a railway fireman named Cameron, but artificial respiration failed to restore-breathing Tho deceased, with his parents, was on a holiday visit to his relatives here. _____ A rather serious accident occurred oa Sunday at" Alton to a young man named Edward M'Donnell, who was assisting a neighbour in gathering in his hay crop. M'Donnell was working with a hay sweep and was in tno act of clearing it. when the horses started forward, dragging him with the sweep for some distance, bruising lur* terribly and breaking two of his ribs, one of tho latter penetratng the lung; The injured man was motored with all speed to the Patcst Hospital, where it was found that besides the injuries mentioned, ho was suffering severe!), from shock.
A remarkable collision occurred at Heatherlea, Manawatu, last week' between a motor-car driven by Mr. Annabell, who ie in charge of the Roputaroa railway station, and a horse ridden by a boy named G. Gay. Tho horse bolted and galloped alone until it struck the motor and actually fell right on top of the car body. . The car • had a full load, the other occupants besides the driver being a friend of his Mr. Annabels two children, and Mr. H. Jones's two daughters. None of tlieso was seriously hurt,, although Mr Annabell suffered some painful abrasions about the head, and one of the children sustained severe cuts upon the liands and arms. The b.o.v riding the horse also escaped with minor injuries. The horse, however was so seriously injured that it had to be destroyed.' The car was also badly dam'"Mr. E. Kellett, a, member of the Otago Military Service Board, who was in the motor fatality near Lumsdon, has sufficiently recovered to get about. His principal injuries are connned to the right arm (which he is unable to use) and to his back.
