M'Carthy, S.M., yesterday delivered judgment upon tho case of Frederick Charles Munro, manager of a Marble Bar in Manners Street, who was charged with keeping his establishment open on a Sunday for the purposo of trading. His Worship said that on the Sunday in question the bar was open from 10 a.m. to about 10 p.m., and from two to three> thousand persons were served with light refreshment in the course of the day. Some of the persons were regular patrons, and some wore in from the country; but although the defendant had proved that a light riieal was a necessity for a great number of patrons, many were Wellington residents and vwld obtain light refreshments in their own homes. Shops could' not be kept open merely to satisfy the whims and caprices <,f those who could supply themselves. Tho fact that the penalty imposed 'by the section was merely nominal, and did not act as a deterrent was beside the question. Munro was fined £1 and costs 7s. Gottfried Anton .Torgenson,_ who™ case was similar to Munro's, withdrew the plea of puiltv lie had entered.' Tie also was fined £1 and costs.
