SCHOOLS BREAKING UP
PRIZE DISTRIBUTION
BANKS COLLEGE
The annual prize-giving nt Banks' Collego tool; lilac/; yesterday ntternoon, the prizes and certillcntcs being distributed by the Mayor of Wellington, Mr. J. I'. Luke, O.M.U. There was a largo attendance ot relatives and friends of the scholars. The director (Mr. 11. Amos), after welcoming the Jlayor and the other visitors, said that it was very pleasing to find that in these troublous times parents were still taking a keen Interest in education. This was only right, for a nation could no more afford to btf behind in its schools than in its armaments. It would be a short-sighted polhy to disregard education because a great war was in progress-short-siffhted because on the instruction given to those that were pupils to-day depended the success of the nation in the arduous times ahead after the war. If education were neglected now the Stato would suffer later. Mr. Amos expressed appreciation of the excellent service rendered by the stall. All had shown genuine enthusiasm for the work, and had had the happiest possible relations with the pupils under their charge, lie could not wish lor a better stall, and said that, in his judgment, based on over twonty years' experience of the public and secondary schools of New Zealand, the teachers were the equals in skill and thoroughness of any in the Dominion. 'Lite principal of the school (Mr. W./T. Foster) read liis annual report. He said that the work had proceeded successfully during the year in the hands of a thoroughly capable staff. The examination results had been excellent, and the school had maintained a high standard of effort in athletics and sports.- The school record in cricket and football was a good one. The staff believed firmly in all-round development, and lie asked parents to make games compulsory unless there were medical for not doing so. Mr. Luke said there were people who believed that Banks College gave merely a commercial training. This was not tho caso. Commercial training was of very great importance, and the school had done its part ill providing it. But the training given at Banks College was wido in its scope. He congratulated the teachers on the sucoesa of their labours, and expressed pleasure at taking part in tho prize-giving at a school that 'bail dono important work for the city and the Dominion.
