DAIRYING IN TARANAKI
BIG INCREASES IN VALUES. (From Our Special Correspondent.)'Hav/ara, December 1. Tho progress of South Taranaki &nd some of its concerns was reflected in somo speeches made at the opening of the Hawcra Dairy Company's new branch factory at Tawhiti. Mr. H. E. Johnston said that the progress of Taranaki was due entirely to the dairying industry. Twenty years ago the best of land in the Hawera district could have been bought for £14 per acre; to-day it was worth £80, and the industry was primarily responsible for the increase.
Mr. Burgess, manager of the Bank of New Zealand, said the dairy industry was bound to further increase with the eutting-np of the land into yet smaller areas. In the course of a few years the largest dairy farms in Taranaki would comprise not more than 70 or 80 acres.
The chairman, ' Mr. Corrigan, said that, in 1904 the assets of the company were put down at £7770, and in , 1917 they were valued at £40,000. The value of milk produced in 1904 was worth £16,000, and in 1917 it was worth £91,000.
The butter manufactured in 1904 was £61,900, and thirteen years later '£177,000. The value of the produoe sold in 1904 was £36,000, and in 1917 £137,000. =.
