WELLINGTON V.' WORKING MEN'S CLUB.

Tlie match between the Wellington and Wellington Working Men's Chess Clubs' Was advanced a further stage Inst week, and the position now is: Wellington Chess Club, 10 wins; Workins Men's Club. 7 wins; and there are a, "dozen outstanding games. -These have to be accounted for this week, as the match ends next Saturday evening. Three of the outstanding games have been commenced, viz., W. E. Mason v. Barnes, Godtsehalk v. Wild, and IT. B. Chapman v. E. E. Hicks. In each of these games the forces are equal and a most interesting position Ins been reached. The era me between the two captains naturally attracted most attention. The attack gradually passed to Mr. W. E. Mason, and Mr. Barnes has so far parried it with a resourceful ingenuity that has been quifco a little education to the spectators, of whom "there were a gondlv number. The Workimr Men's Club is putting up a better fight than was expected, and there are consequently regrets that this match, which has not lost any of its, old-time popularity. was rlrnnped for thirteen vcars (1004 to. 1917).

NELSON V. MARLBOROUGH.

Tho Nelson and Marlborough Chess Clubs opposed each other for tho first' time on October 8. the former club snoring 8}- games to Marlborough's H. The game at board 1 betwncn G. F. T)odds (Nelson), <jiul the Rev. N. Fri- ]»■>]■ rr (Picton) was awarded to ' the former by the Wellington Adjudication Board. The Marlborough Club made an improved showing when the return match was played last, Wednesday, the tallv being: Nelson. 5i wins; Marlborough. 3|, and two games marked incomplete, and requiring adjudication. In order to make a tie of the'match tho Marlborough Club will, of course, require to score both the outstanding games.
