GAZETTED AS A DEFAULTER
_ 9 .. ... . A LETTER FROM THE FRONT. . An error in the Records Department or elsewhere has done an injustice to Gunner J. H. Johnston, late of Carterton. In a letter from England, where he was at the time of; writing in training with one of our reinforcement drafts, Gun,ner Johnston asks us _to correct the error which has led to him being gazetted as a defaulter, and we. are glad to dp so. As he pathetically remarks, it is "a bit over the odds ' to be branded as a defaulter and shirker after having volunteered for servico with the Main Body and on three later occasions, ultimately having his desire to servo his country gratified, and being now in all probability in the fighting line. It is possible that the error complained of has been already corrected by the Records Department, but to be on the safe side we make the position clear now. Gunner Johnston's parents are Mr. and Mrs. Jacob Johnston, of Ruawai, Hastwells, via Eketahuna.
