CHEAPER UNIFORMS FOR OFFICERS
WAR. OFFICE FIXED PROFITS. British officers will shortly enjoy an appreciable reduction in the cost of their uniforms as well as a guarantee of the best material being used (states tho "Daily Mail"). A scheme for supplying standard cloth at fixed prices for this purposo is nearing completion. For some time there have been complaints from officers about tho higli prices of uniforms and tho shoddy material used in a number of instances. For a tunio of the best cloth as much as six guineas is charged by somo tailors. Tho now scheme fixes the maximum profit to bo secured by tho cloth manufacturer, the merchant, and the tailor. For the purpose of officers' uniforms wool is to be released at a nrice less than that now quoted in the open market. Tho oxact prices to bo charged for the uniforms have not yet Leon fixed, but it is probablo that thoy will mean a saving of about 30s. on the present price for a uniform of the best material. As regards cheaper uniforms they may not be any loss, but a better material'will be provided. There mil be no "shoddy."
