EXTRAORDINARY CONFLICT OF NEWS
REPORTED DEFEAT OF THE BOLSHEVIKI SEVERE FIGHTING IN ITALY ENEMY ATTACKING ON THE PIAVE The Italian dispatches to-day rep ort desperate fighting in the Trentino, in the Asisgo region. The enemy has also established a bridgehead on tho Piavo front. In the fighting the Italians have gallantly held their own at certain points, while at others they repulsed the enemy. Details of the German propaganda that did the mischief with the Second Army at Tolmino disclose a remarkable, not to say criminal, campaign of lying and misrepresentation, carried to the point of publishing in clever forgeries of the Italian newspapers start ling and most upsetting statements about the Trench and British laying waste tho Italian interior and committing unspeakable outrages. The news from Russia is most cou-flictin-the Bolshevik communique, which is tho bulletin of the Proleteriat°Government for tho time being, asserts that Kerensky and Kormloff have been heavily defeated. Other reports assert that tho reverse was the case' that Kerensky's troops had been victorious, and already were m occupation of certain portions of the city. The operations in the West hare been confined to artillery duels. Mr. Lloyd George, in the course of his speech in Paris, candidly faced the facte of the general situation, and pointed out how the lack of Allied co-operation and unity of purpose had contributed to the Serbian and Rumanian disasters-.
